Aloha, if you’re planning a Hawaiian vacation but mindful of your budget, you’re in for a treat. With over 10 million visitors each year, Hawaii is a top destination for travelers worldwide. Yet, many are unaware that an affordable Hawaiian vacation is possible without sacrificing comfort or location.

I’ve dedicated time to researching and compiling a list of the 5 Best Budget Friendly Hotels in Hawaii. Understand that budget hotels in Hawai’i is in comparison to other hotels here.

These selections are more than just affordable accommodations; they are unique finds that provide an enjoyable Hawaiian experience without the high cost. Prepare to explore options where serene paradise aligns with value, helping you make your Hawaiian journey both memorable and economical.

Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo (DoubleTree by Hilton)

On the Big Island, Kona is on the west, and Hilo is on the east side of the island. It’s important to note that due to Mauna Kea (the world’s highest mountain when including underwater height), the Hilo side gets significantly more rain.

That said, Hilo offers excellent value for money and delivers the Hawaiian experience that visitors have come to love. The Grand Naniloa offers beautiful guest rooms, sweeping ocean views, and all of the amenities of a beach hotel with the (Hawaii) cost of a value property. Stretching beyond its price tag, the hotel has an 18-hole golf course, on-site bars and restaurants, shopping, and some of the prettiest sea views in the world.

The Grand Naniloa Hotel is not just about value; it boasts a museum-quality collection of photographs by renowned photographer Kim Taylor Reece. As you roam its corridors, you can delve into the captivating history and culture of Hilo through these striking images.

You will also find a long list of things to do on the Big Island and if you take the time you will notice a lot of them are free (well, maybe parking).

I just passed by recently and got some great shots of the pool, lobby, and some artwork. I hope to stay here soon and review the room. You will notice very little sandy beachfront here but the water looked amazing. This hotel is also along the Banyan Tree Drive which is an amazing historic place. I walked it and did a full video which included a shot of the entrance to this hotel.

Best Family Friendly Hotels In Hawaii

Best Time To Visit Hawaii

Hotel Moloka’i

Sometimes you just want to get away from it all. Hotel Moloka’i delivers on that promise. Families and those staying long-term can settle in with a full kitchen, and one of the quietest resorts in Hawaii. While it certainly doesn’t have an infinity pool like the Four Seasons, guests enjoy the great weather, stunning views, and affordability of paradise at their fingertips.

The hotel is located on Moloka’i, an island that is a part of Maui County and adjacent to the island of the same name. There used to be a ferry service between Maui and Moloka’i, operated by Molokai Ferry, which has been discontinued. This service used to provide a vital link between the two islands but ceased operations primarily due to financial challenges.

Hotel Molokai is known for its authentic Polynesian architecture, which prominently features an open-air, thatched-roof design reminiscent of a traditional Hawaiian village. This distinctive design choice not only enhances the tropical atmosphere but also provides a unique, culturally immersive experience for guests.

Getting to Moloka’i now is by air only and you can find flights from Honolulu, O’ahu, or from Kahului, Maui. The Moloka’i airport is in Ho’olehua and has the code MKK.

Paradise Bay

A rare property on the northeast side of O’ahu offers a version of the Pacific atoll that Hawaii once was. Hidden in a bay right on the water, Paradise Bay offers guests access to kitchens and lots of privacy. Amenities include water sports equipment, even the verandas of this tiny property are offered on floating barges.

Paradise Bay is an affordable alternative for families disenchanted by commercial Waikiki looking for a more introspect version of Hawaii that is now all but forgotten. It’s as local as a visitor to the islands can feel.

You can map out all your favorite things to do on O’ahu from here and will appreciate how close you are to the famous Lanikai Beach and Kualoa Ranch.

The ISO

Kauai is known as the “Garden Island” for its lush and secluded cliffs and coves. For most, the island is out of the price range of many families and couples, but the ISO offers beachfront access, spacious rooms, and Kauai lifestyle without the Ritz-Carlton prices. In fact, in 2019 the property won the “Best Boutique” hotel award in Hawaii.

While the nightly rate will exceed our $150 barrier when you add in taxes and fees, the hotel does not charge a resort fee at the moment. Take your savings and check out some of the best things to do on Kaua’i, you will be surprised how many are virtually free.

Vive Hotel Waikiki

In the heart of the Waikiki district with shopping and restaurants to suit all budgets, the Vive Hotel Waikiki is also just a short walk to Waikiki Beach, three blocks away. It’s one of the most affordable options for hotels in Honolulu while still delivering an updated and modern hotel.

Vive Hotel has some of the lowest-priced stays in all of Hawaii but delivers on the important aspects: great location, walking distance to area attractions and the beach, and a clean room with modern amenities.

I walk by this hotel regularly when visiting Waikiki, about 3-4 times a month, and it is always busy, clean, and presentable. I hope to get in here and do a full review soon. With all the things to do on O’ahu, this is a great option to save up your money for a variety of other options.

Wrapping up our tour of Hawaii’s budget-friendly accommodations, I’ve showcased a selection of options that deliver affordability without skimping on comfort or location. Whether you’re drawn to the spectacular views at the Grand Naniloa Hotel in Hilo, the tranquil ambiance of Hotel Moloka’i, or the vibrant scene at Vive Hotel Waikiki, each provides a distinctive taste of Hawaiian hospitality that fits a modest budget.

Remember, booking early and aiming for off-peak travel times can help you snag the best deals.

As I pack for my next Hawaiian adventure, I’m reminded that an economical trip doesn’t mean missing out on the islands’ magic and allure. If you’ve visited any of these hotels or have other budget-friendly recommendations, please share your experiences in the comments. I look forward to hearing your stories and seeing you in the islands. Safe travels and aloha!
