Hawaiian Airlines is making some long-awaited improvements to its lounge offerings—perhaps not coincidentally, shortly after being acquired by Alaska Airlines.
The airline recently revealed concept designs for a brand-new premium lounge at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), set to open by the end of 2027. This isn’t just a minor upgrade—it’s a complete transformation of their lounge experience, and it’s been long overdue.
The lounge will be located at the entrance of the Mauka Concourse in Terminal 1 and will be a staggering five times larger than the current Premier Club at HNL. One concept design photo below shows some aircraft outside the window so we have some idea of the general location.
I think what makes this announcement even more significant is that it comes after the airline recently opened a second Premier Club at Maui’s Kahului Airport. It’s clear Hawaiian Airlines is on a mission to elevate the travel experience for its guests, and this new lounge, long overdue, is a key part of that effort.
Of course, the big question is, Will the popular Dunkin Donuts spot located right in this area survive?
The upcoming lounge will be five times larger than Hawaiian Airlines’ current Premier Club at HNL and is designed to reflect Hawai‘i’s natural beauty through thoughtful elements and vibrant colors.
While specific details about amenities such as seating options, dining, and other features have not yet been fully disclosed, the airline has emphasized that the new space will offer a modern and tranquil environment for travelers. For more details, see the Hawaiian Airlines news release.
Why This Lounge Update Is Long Overdue
Hawaiian Airlines’ lounge offerings have long lagged behind competitors, a fact highlighted in a recent One Mile at a Time analysis. The outdated design and limited amenities of the current Premier Club and Plumeria Club at HNL have left travelers yearning for a refresh.
I recently explored these lounges in my guide to Hawaiian Airlines lounges.
This new lounge initiative isn’t just a response to industry trends—it’s a critical move to align Hawaiian Airlines’ ground services with its reputation for top-tier hospitality.
Alaska Airlines’ Opportunity to Innovate
Hawaiian Airlines’ new lounge also highlights a broader opportunity for Alaska Airlines, which acquired Hawaiian’s parent company in a major industry shift. Alaska has the chance to redefine airport lounges by combining local culture with leisure-oriented amenities, as discussed in my article on the potential for Alaska Airlines lounge innovations.
With Alaska Airlines testing the Atmos brand, it’s worth wondering if this partnership with Hawaiian Airlines might lead to a unified branding strategy under the “Atmos” umbrella.
Hawaiian Airlines could integrate its own cultural flair into the concept, creating something like “Atmos by Hawaiian” or “Atmos Hōkū Lounge” (hōkū meaning “star” in Hawaiian) to evoke a sense of connection between the skies and the islands.
The Atmos concept, which seamlessly combines contemporary luxury with regional storytelling, would be a natural fit for Hawai‘i’s unique hospitality and rich cultural heritage.
