The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has once again cemented its reputation as a leader in Hawai’i’s hospitality scene by winning the 2024 Historic Hotels of America Sustainability Champion Award. This accolade, presented by the Historic Hotels of America organization, recognizes the hotel’s outstanding commitment to preserving cultural heritage and embracing eco-friendly practices.

About the Historic Hotels of America and the Award

The Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating hotels that embody the rich cultural and architectural history of the United States. With members spanning centuries-old inns to luxurious resorts, these properties reflect the stories of the past while innovating for the future.

The Sustainability Champion Award celebrates establishments that prioritize environmental stewardship, integrate sustainable practices into their operations, and lead the way in eco-conscious hospitality. For a hotel in Hawai’i to receive this honor is especially significant, as the islands depend heavily on responsible tourism to protect their delicate ecosystems and preserve their cultural legacy.

Why This Recognition Matters for Hawai’i

As a state deeply connected to nature and culture, Hawai’i’s hospitality sector carries the dual responsibility of providing world-class experiences while safeguarding its fragile environment. Awards like this highlight how hotels such as the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel balance these priorities. By earning the Sustainability Champion Award, the hotel demonstrates that it is possible to maintain luxurious accommodations while committing to mālama—the Hawaiian value of caring for the land and people.

This recognition sets an inspiring example for other resorts in Hawai’i and beyond, proving that sustainable tourism can go hand in hand with preserving cultural authenticity and delivering exceptional guest experiences.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel: A Testament to Excellence

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, located on the breathtaking Kohala Coast, is no stranger to accolades. With its iconic mid-century architecture, stunning ocean views, and dedication to impeccable service, the hotel has long been a favorite for travelers seeking a luxurious retreat. However, its commitment to sustainability is just as remarkable.

In my review of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, I explored how the property combines its rich history with modern amenities to create an unforgettable experience. From eco-conscious initiatives such as energy-efficient upgrades and sustainable sourcing of materials to programs that honor Hawaiian culture, the hotel exemplifies the principles celebrated by the Historic Hotels of America.

Aloha, and welcome. Your journey around the web has brought you here, and I’m grateful for the chance to share a bit about Hawaiʻi with you. I do my best to provide thoughtful insights on hotels, airlines, dining, and the ever-evolving travel scene in Hawaiʻi. My role? I’m the one steering the ship—quietly behind the scenes—making sure every piece of information you find here is worth your time. I grew up in Kaʻalaea on Oʻahu, surrounded by the beauty and complexity of Hawaiʻi, which shaped how I see the world and connect with it. As a native Hawaiian and someone who works in below-wing operations for Hawaiian Airlines, I’ve always been drawn to understanding the details—whether it’s about travel, culture, or the people who make it all happen. I travel extensively across the islands, seeking out what’s new, what’s changing, and what’s truly worth sharing. From the latest hotel openings to restaurant reviews and updates on travel trends, I aim to bring you accurate, first-hand insights you can trust. For a closer look, you can also find me on YouTube, where I dive deeper with visual reviews and updates. My hope is that this space helps you connect with Hawaiʻi in a meaningful way, whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth.

  1. Sustainability must be a joke. What about social sustainability?

This is the very hotel that not only tries to force Hawaiian people to pay to get access to their own public beach, but they also arbitrarily restrict public beach access despite the Hawaiian law about access. Enforcing an extremely limited number of parking spots? Maybe, but what about drop off? Why are they preventing Uber dropoffs which literally goes against the spirit of the law?

And then our travel bloggers are embracing these resorts? Pff….

    • Hi Minos,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Please share some specifics or point me to where I can get them. Interested to learn more about this as limited parking spots near some beaches on O’ahu is an issue as well.

I took an Uber to this hotel and did not encounter any issues, can you be more specific as to when and exactly where the drop off is being blocked?

      B
