Many might wonder why Alaska Airlines—or any airline—would invest in an upgraded lounge at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), given that Honolulu is primarily a leisure travel market rather than a business hub. After all, airport lounges traditionally cater to business travelers seeking a quiet workspace, premium amenities, and a reprieve from the busy terminal environment.
But this is exactly what Alaska plans to do as mentioned in their Alaska Accelerate strategic plan.
However, ignoring the potential of a well-designed lounge for leisure travelers could be a missed opportunity.
Hawai‘i is a major international travel destination, attracting millions of visitors each year, including families, couples, and adventure seekers. These travelers, while not typical business-class flyers, could greatly benefit from a thoughtfully designed lounge experience tailored to their unique travel needs.
A Sampling Of Current Lounges In Honolulu
Alaska Airlines’ lounges in Seattle are known for their spaciousness, modern amenities, and high-quality services. Travelers can enjoy comfortable seating, complimentary refreshments, and dedicated workspaces. For a detailed look at these facilities, you can refer to our comprehensive video review of Alaska Airlines’ Seattle-Tacoma lounges.
In contrast, Honolulu’s current lounge offerings vary in quality and services. Here’s an overview of the existing lounges at HNL that I have reviewed:
Plumeria Lounge
Operated by Hawaiian Airlines, the Plumeria Lounge has received mixed reviews, with some travelers finding it underwhelming in terms of amenities and comfort. I don’t have a detailed review of this lounge but I have visited on several occasions when flying out of Honolulu, this article has some photos and video.
Delta Sky Club
The Delta Sky Club offers a range of amenities, including complimentary snacks and beverages, though it may not match the size and luxury of lounges found in larger airports. More details can be found in our Delta Sky Club Honolulu review.
Admirals Club
American Airlines’ Admirals Club provides a comfortable space with standard amenities, catering primarily to its passengers. Our Admirals Club Honolulu review offers further insights.
United Club
The United Club at HNL delivers a satisfactory lounge experience with essential services for travelers. For a closer look, refer to our United Club Honolulu review.

Why This Concept Could Succeed: A Call for Action
Creating a leisure-centric airport lounge isn’t just an industry innovation—it’s an opportunity for Alaska Airlines to live up to its public commitment to Hawai‘i. As part of its expanded local engagement, Alaska Airlines recently established a Hawai‘i Community Advisory Board to strengthen its ties with the islands. This board, composed of community leaders, cultural practitioners, and executives, aims to ensure that Alaska Airlines operates with cultural sensitivity and benefits local communities.
But words must translate into meaningful action. Developing a leisure-focused lounge grounded in Hawai‘i’s cultural values would demonstrate that Alaska Airlines is serious about its promise to honor and support the islands it serves. This could become a model for how airlines engage with the destinations they operate in—especially in an era where cultural respect and sustainability are non-negotiable.
Rewriting the Manual on Leisure Travel Lounges
Alaska Airlines has a unique opportunity to redefine what an airport lounge can be—not just a space for business travelers but a true cultural gateway designed for leisure travelers and families. By integrating elements from the HTA’s 2025 Strategic Plan—such as environmental sustainability, cultural education, and community engagement—Alaska could create a world-class lounge experience that honors Hawai‘i’s heritage while setting a new industry standard.
The Hawai‘i Community Advisory Board should seize this moment to guide Alaska Airlines in designing a space that goes beyond comfort and convenience. They should advocate for a lounge that showcases local art, supports Hawaiian cultural practitioners, and emphasizes sustainable tourism practices. This project could become a blueprint for how airlines and communities collaborate for mutual benefit—proving that hospitality can be both respectful and innovative.
The future of travel demands experiences that are immersive, authentic, and sustainable. Alaska Airlines has the resources, community partnerships, and responsibility to make this vision a reality.
